Shanti Nepal : BCHP
Introduction
This is a partnership project between Shanti Nepal and the ‘Up Lift Program’ run by the Human Development and Community Service (HDCS). This project was started in Dec 2005 to address the basic primary health needs of Badarjhula, an isolated poor community located in southern boarder of Chitwan District in the Ayodhyapuri Village Development Committee. The community consists of about four hundred households, made up of sixteen struggling ethnic groups, who have settled in and are cultivating part of the jungle without legal status. The community has very low socio-economic status and is living in scarcity of services including basic health services.
The Major Activities
Health Awareness
The project conducts activities in community groups, schools and families to highlight preventable health problems and promote healthy practices. The project provides training for local volunteers, mobilizes the local community for health awareness and seeks the provision of basic services.
Community Health Clinic
A community health clinic is being run to provide basic primary health services for the population, including the women and children. The clinic provides quality health care at an affordable cost through a scheme called the Community Drug Program. This program allows clients to pay a subsidized cost for drugs. The community has expressed their enthusiasm for the local provision of essential health care at a price they can afford.
Capacity Building of Local Management Committee
This project was planned and is run with the involvement of the local community through a local management committee. The project aims to build the capacity of the management committee so that they will be active participants and will sustain the program long term.
