One day, Indra Man Shakya, a health worker of Dhading Project, encountered a woman, Kanchimaya Chepang with her two children in Jogimara VDC of Dhading. He was shocked by the appearance of one of the two children. Binita, the five-year old girl was just skin and bones and could not even lift her head. Indra examined her and realized she was terribly malnourished. He spoke to her mother and grandfather who were with her, and convinced them, after some effort, that Binita should go for treatment. Binita, accompanied by her mother and brother was taken to the nutrition rehabilitation center in Primary Health Care Center, Chapaguan, a program run by Shanti Nepal.

Binita is a child from very poor Chepang family. Her father had died and her mother was left to take care of five children on her own. Her mother had not looked after Binita properly, not giving her adequate food and care.
As a result she was severely undernourished when she came to the centre, weighing just 5.4 kilograms, less than 50% for her age. Her three-year-old brother was also malnourished. Both of them were rehabilitated in the center with her mother.
Binita became center of attention; and not only in the health center as a national television program also highlighted her condition. With the care and support of the health workers, she gradually gained weight and the strength to walk. To the surprise of workers, her mother continued to be uncaring towards Binita and left her alone. Within a month of treatment, Binita’s weight had reached 10 kilograms and she started walking and was able to return to normal life.

Now, Binita has been recovered her health and is living a healthy and normal life with her maternal grandfather. Binita’s life was seriously in jeopardy from her condition and the tragedy is it her malnutrition was entirely preventable. Shanti Nepal aims to work in health awareness and promotion to try to prevent such stories from happening again.
